Review #5 America's Favorite Cookie is Also Japan's

One of my all time favorite cookies are Oreos.  Who doesn't like Oreos?  I am pretty sure that Oreo is one of the most recognized cookies in the world.

Japan have a big variety of this iconic cookie; from cookies, to soft cookie, to crunchy bars.  They have flavors like green tea, tiramisu, cookies and cream and strawberry among other flavors.  I have so far tried the green tea crunchy bar, green tea soft cookie, cookies and cream crunchy bar and the strawberry crunchy bar.  They are all soooooo goooood!!!!

Lets start with the Green Tea Flavors!

The Green Tea Cookie Crunch Bar is a delicious bar (about 2 inches) that have crunchy chunks of Oreo cookie mixed with green tea crunch and covered with a green tea cream.  These babies have the perfect combination of chocolate and green tea.  It is not too sweet, so it is very easy to it more than one.  In one box you will get 8 individually wrapped bars.

Crunchy Bar

The Green Tea Soft Cookie is a cake like cookie with a green tea filling.  These are pretty much like the cakesters we have here in PR (and the USA).  The soft cookie tastes just like the regular Oreo cookie and the filling have a very soft green tea taste.  These are perfect to eat with milk or tea.  Each bag contains 10 individually wrapped cookies.

Now, in for the real treat!? Strawberry Oreo Cookie Crunchy Bar!  For me these were the most delicious cookie bar I have ever tasted.  These 2 inch long crunchy bar are so good, I ate 3 the day I got them!  On the inside you will find Oreo crunch, strawberry and cream crunchies, all coated in chocolate milk.  Like all Japanese Okashi, these tastes like the real deal... pure strawberries.  These are also a little bit sweeter than the other cookie crunch bars.  Each bag have 10 individually wrapped bars.

Over all, these is one of those things that you have to try before you die!  I shared these cookies with friends that are not very familiar with the Japanese culture and they were very impressed and enjoyed them a lot!  So go ahead and grab a glass of milk and enjoy these treats.  They will become your favorite cookie too!!!

Review #4 Unchikun and Heart Moko Moko Toilet

I have wonder for some time now, why Japanese people love poop related items!?  They can be cute, and let’s be honest... we all poop!  Japanese folks go as far as making kawaii poop toys and characters, having a poop museum and making synthetic meat out of poop...  Can you imagine a burger made out of poop!?  I sure can't!!!

In Japan, is very common to talk about poop in polite conversations.  Usually when we talk about poop is to make fun of somebody, curse, or just table talk and when we do is not in public since this is considered rude. ^___^

We all know (and some of us love) Mr. Hanky The Christmas Poo from the cartoon South Park.  He is a little turd that likes to "spread" love and happiness to the children of South Park, specialy Stan.  It was very choking when this character was introduced in the series.  He appears in several episodes and they tend to make it very clear that he is a poop by making poop rain, smearing poop on the kids’ faces and on any surface.  This makes the character a very gross one at times.

Now, when it comes to Japan, we see poop on a different note.  It is cute, colorful, not gross, natural and poop characters make you feel like poop is your friend!  How!?  By just treating poop like what it is, something that is part of our lives and not a taboo.  Also, by giving it a charm and cute colors, adorable voices and quirky personalities on anime.
The best example of how poop can be kawaii is one of our favorite novelty okashi, Unchikun.  Unchi means poop in Japanese.

- Unchikun -

This adorable poop, comes in different colors and with different faces.  Inside of each Unchikun you will find 10 individually wrapped little poop shaped hard candies.  The flavors are strawberry, lemon, ramune and green apple.  After you are done eating all of the candy, your Unchikun can be used as a poopie bank!  The opening at the bottom where you get the candy from  can be closed and you cut an opening on the back so you can put money inside.

A new item to our inventory is the Moko Moko Mokolet (Moko Moko Toilet) by Heart.  Poop’s BFF! This is by far one of the funniest yet weird snacks I have EVER tried!!!  You have to put the toilet together.  Once you are done, you make a cola drink or a ramune drink in the toilet tank and you drink it right out of the toilet bowl!!!  This was just too weird for me, but we could not stop giggling while we were making it.

Moko Moko Mokolet -

The reaction that I get from people is so far the same, “why are the Japanese obsessed with poop?!”  Honestly I believe that they are not obessesed with poop! I believe that since poop is something natural, that we all do, Japanese talk about it in a very comfortable way.

Now lets have a drink for poop! :D

Review #3 Umaibo

When we are ignorant about what the Japanese pop culture is, we think that all candies (including sweets) are made of nasty things. We think that all candies are made of fish, eel, soy, beans, or squid.  When we become more familiar with it, we discover that Japanese folks love chocolate and that a lot of our favorite American popular snacks are also their favorite! We also confirm the fact that the misconception we had is some what true.

With these in mind... let's talk a bit about Umaibo.  These delicious snacks are one of the most popular snacks in Japan by the young and the old, also one of the cheapest.  They are the perfect example of East meets West.  This is cause the Umaibo is very a-like one the most popular snacks in the Western civilization, but some of the flavors are very unusual to us.

An Umaibo is nothing more than a fat Cheeto!  In one bag, you will find this crunchy puffed cornmeal stick.  It is perfectly round and hollow, about an inch thick and 5 inches long. It is covered, top to bottom, on the outside by a powder of the flavor of your choice.  The chocolate one is actually covered with milk chocolate.

The flavor of your choice... That is going to be the hardest decision you will ever make as Umaibos come in more than 20 different flavors, some sweet, salty or savory.  Some of these flavors are regional and sold only in certain areas of Japan and some flavors have being discontinued. About 10 flavors have being discontinued.

- left to right: Honey, Chicken Curry, Vegetable Salad, Beef, Corn Poteage, Kimchi, Natto, Salami, Takoyaki, Teriyaki Burger, Ebi (shrimp) mayo, Brown Sugar, Cheese, mentaiko, Tonkatsu, Pizza-

Some of the flavors currently available are:

Mentai // Corn Potage // Natto // Cheese // Teriyaki Burger // Salami // Vegetable Salad // Onion
Chicken Curry // Tonkatsu Sauce // Ebimayo // Takoyaki // Chocolate // Beef Tongue // Pizza
Kimshi // Monja //  Honey-flavor // Brown Sugar // Mentaiko //  Okonomiyaki //  Kiritanpo

So far I have personally tried 11 different flavors.  Every single one of them delicious and taste just like the flavor the Umaibo is based on.  For example, the Corn Poteage one tastes like Cream of Corn and leaves a mild after taste of corn on the cob.  Also, the smell of every Umaibo is really strong.  You can open the wrapper of the Chicken Curry one and immediatly you will smell the curry.

Beside the interesting amount of different flavors, the wrappers are very eye catching!  Every single wrapper features Umaemon, a cat that resembles the anime character, Doraemon.  Umaemon appears on every wrapper, dressed in different characters from samurai to clown, from singer to astronaut.

Here is a close up on the Umaibo that I have:

- Honey, Brown Sugar -

 - Cheese, Pizza -

- Corn Potage, Vegetable Salad, Kimchi, Natto -

- Salami, Beef, Takoyaki,  Tonkatsu, Chicken Curry, Teriyaki Burger -

- Takoyaki, mentaiko, Ebimayo -

I can honestly say that Umaibo is one of my favorite snacks!  It is cheap, delicious and doesn't have a lot of calories.  I do advise people that have allergies to seafood, to be cautious.  A lot of Japanese snacks are made with natural flavors and the have warnings of having traces of the actual fish or shrimp.  To you reading this, I give you the same advise.  The last thing that we want is for you to have an allergic reaction to a snack.

Now, grab and Umaibo and a Pepsi White and enjoy!!!

Review #2 Kracie Happy Kitchen Hamburger

**Warning: Lots of pictures! Please be patient. Also use of foul language, but its all in a harmless way. I don't intend to offend anybody. SPOILER ALERT!!! I will be very specific about taste, smell and feels, so if you don't want the surprise to be spoiled, look at the pics, but dont read! lol ENJOY!**

Hi!

I would like to start saying that this review brought a lot of emotions out for the night! :p

When I was a little girl, I spent looong hours playing with my Barbie's Kitchen Set. When I was 7 yrs old, my dad build me a doll house (the regular ones were too small for me since I was a really tall kid! hehe). I truly loved playing house and playing kitchen, so this kit allowed me to relived my childhood in a way.

There are a ton of reviews of the product on YouTube, however, I couldn't find one that was specific about flavors and textures. Hell, I even thought that this was sweet and it is not! LOL So I decided to be a bit more specific about certain things that you don't see or hear in the videos. All of the instructions on the box are in Japanese (duh!), so at first it was a little bit confusing when it came to what is what. The reason for this, is because 4 of the bags that have the powders look kinda alike. The colors are red, magenta, pink and orange. In most videos you can barely tell which one is what color. So here I will also help you with that.

Japanese DIY kits are extremely popular, EVERYWHERE! Since these kits are considered "food technology" (look it up! I'm not making this shit up lol) they are really expensive. They are fun to make and fun to eat, but be ready to pay $7 - $10 or more for a kit like this one. Trust me, they are worth every single penny spent.

So, lets get down to business!

Once you open the box, you will find this little bag with everything inside. You can also cut this part and use it as a picnic blanket.

This is the back of the bag. Here you find the template for the cheese and the label for the soda cup, the fry bag and the burger flags.

Before you start unpacking, let me advise you of the additional items you will need. Paper towels, scissors, tape, toothpicks and a cup of water. You will really need them (mainly the water lol).

Here you got your bake and measuring ware, plastic knife and spatula (just like the one SpongeBob uses) and the soda cup.

Now here is where you will go, "Thanks Nai!" lol This was a true brain fart! LOL I though the blue would be the soda (association with ice), orange for the bread and red would be the ketchup (logic), but Kracie didn't see things the way I saw them when I unpacked the items! lol

If you are like me that once you start something you wanna get it all done right and right away, you will want to start by cutting everything you will need to use. Cut the bake-ware and the measuring-ware (the little triangle thingy on the corner) and cut all of the "decals". This way you can start cooking and preping.

Tape to the back of the cup.

Tape to the silver part of the flag.

Tape side to side on the back and then fold the bottom a bit and tape to the back.

Now lets get cookin'! This are all powders that you mix with water and "done". You have to be precise with the measurements. On the back of the box you will see the instructions and will tell you how much water you need to make what.

You don't really need to follow a specific order, but by logic the soda should be the last one to make. I will present them in the order in how I made the.

Add the water and mix with the content of the Orange Pack and form a very compact paste. Place in microwave oven for about 30 seconds (depending on your microvave, can be 30 or more).

After it cools a little, you can get it out of the mold. You will notice it have the grooves of the mold. You can use that as a guide to cut them like fries.

The knife included is pretty good and safe, but don't expect perfect cuts.

Place them in the baggy and french fries are done!

I have the (good or bad) habit of smelling EVERYTHING I'm about to eat. Once I open the packet, my first impression was "this smells like mashed potatoes". After you cook them, the smell of mashed potatoes gets stronger.

Moving on to the bread and meat.

These you don't mix in the same spot you are going to bake them, you use the square "mixing bowl" and then add the mix to the corresponding spot. The middle one is for the meat. It have the texture of meat at the bottom. The sides are for the buns since they have the dome shape at the bottom.

After 30 seconds on the microwave you can see that the bread actually rose. To me that was mind blowing!!!

When adding the meat and the bread mix to the molds, you have to use your baking skills! For the meat, press the mix down with your fingers. It's gummy like, so it needs a little push to get in place. For the bread, once you added the batter YOU MUST hit the mold slightly against the palm of your hand so there are no air pockets. I've seen a lot of videos where this in not done and the result is a bun with a nasty air pocket at the bottom. Also, I suggest that you leave the mold to cool off after you get it out of the microwave. It is really hard to get them buns out while the mold is hot. The bread doesn't really have a smell, but the meat does. It smells just like the meat flavor ramen noodles!!!

And then... the cheese!

Using the "mixing bowl", add the water and the powder mix. Once it is well mixed, you can mold it into a little ball and place it on the cheese template.

Its a bit hard to get it perfectly on the template since the cheese have a gummy like texture to it.

Now cut in two perfect squares, and done! We got cheese! Yay!

The cheese doesn't have a really strong cheesy smell to it, but it does smell a little like Chiz Wis! hehe

Let's go back to them buns!

Now that they are cool, you can get them out of the mold. With the tip of the knife you can start to separate them and then with a few bumps it will fall out.

Cut them all in halves. You will have two meats and two pairs of buns. Its a bit hard to cut the meat so you might have to get a real knife. If like me, you wanna stay in character, use the plastic knife and get ready to rumble lol.

Ketchup for them fries!

Ketchup is not that big of a deal! Just add water and mix! I used the flash on this pic cause I wanted the gloss to show!

Hamburger, ASSEMBLE!

Let's see if I can remember how to do this! lol

Buns

Buns, Meat

Buns, Meat, Cheese

Buns, Meat, Cheese, Ketchup

Yay!!! I did it! lol

I bet you are all saying, "But, but, but where is the soda!?". I didn't take pics of the soda :( I took video! XD So lets see how soda is made!

When it comes to the soda, its all show! LOL I loved this part cause of all of them fuzzy and soda pop sounds. It was really neat. When I opened the packet I didn't even have to get close to smell the soda, as it hit me right in the nose! lol really strong soda candy like smell.

Here you have it! The whole meal! My sister is a big collector of miniature tea sets, so I used some of the plates to serve the burgers and the ketchup. For size reference, the burgers are a bit smaller than a quarter and about an inch tall (if you make them as a single hamburger, you can also make it a double lol).

If you are wondering how does it all taste like.... well let me tell you.... it taste freaking amazing! It is all kinda weird since you make it like if you were playing kitchen! The taste is pretty good, specially for something that you make by just adding water. The fries taste like mashed potatoes, the buns taste like sweet rolls, the meat taste like meat flavor ramen noodles, the cheese taste like canned cheese (even though it smells like Chiz Wis), the ketchup taste like ketchup (lol it kinda taste like tonkatsu sauce, which in all reality is a sweeter version of the ketchup we know) and the soda tastes just like soda flavored candy.

There are a lot of different kits. From donuts to sushi.  Some are sweet and some are savory, like this one. Okashi Noms will have  the most popular flavors available at PR Comic Con.

Review #1 Caramel Corn

Noms... Who doesn't enjoy a snack!? Sometimes I enjoy them way too much! :) When my friend Maricely pitch me her idea of an all Japanese snack store, I was like "Why is this not happening!? Let's do it!" So we immediately started working on the idea. It was a long shot, but knowing that a lot of our friends share our LOVE for Japanese sweets and snacks, we couldn't go wrong.

In the past, I only had  the common snacks like Pocky (who has never had one!?), Hello Panda, Yan Yan, Koala Biscuits and Ramune. Also, I had tried some more traditional snacks like the rice cakes, pastries and taiyaki (its a fish shaped cake filled with red bean paste most of the time). So yeah, I was missing out, A LOT!

Thanks to this adventure called "Okashi Noms" I have being able to expand my knowledge on all things sweet, salty and savory that are Japanese snacks. Thanks Maricely for this amazing opportunity! We sure have fun!

I decided in 2012, that I was going to start blogging about the snacks that I try. Kinda like a Nom Diary! I have tried a LOT of new snacks since we opened Okashi Noms in 2012. Today I will start with one of my all times favorite, Caramel Corn.

Caramel Corn is a very light weight snack. It comes in a ridiculous amount of different flavors, some of them seasonal (why Japanese have to torture us with seasonal items is beyond my comprehension T__T). Some of the flavors that we have offered in our store are Mango, Vanilla and Almond, but we have tried Hot Cocoa and Maple.

~Vanilla and Almond Flavor Caramel Corn ~

They remind me a of cross between cheese curls and Corn Pops. People have asked us if they are made with shrimp because of the similar shape, but I assure you, there is NO shrimp! lol

~ I ate a lot of them before taking this picture so it looks kinda empty lol ~

The calories on most Japanese snacks is very low so they are pretty healthy. If you don't watch yourself, you can eat a whole bag of Caramel Corn in just one sit, but no worries cause you are not going to get fat by eating a bag of this babies! ^_^ 15 grams of Caramel Corns (about 5 pieces) contain around 80 calories, 5g of fat, no trans fat, no saturated fat, no cholesterol, 30 mg of sodium 10g of carbs and 5g of sugar.

Each bag is pretty full. We are used to opening a bag of Doritos and half of the bag is air and the other half of Doritos (and a butt load of crumbs), but rest assure that you will not have that same experience with this snack. Though they are crunchy, they are easy to bite and rarely any crumbs at the bottom. The bag is made of aluminum, so well re-sealed they will last a while. Keep this in mind cause left opened they will get soggy pretty quick.

I recommend this product 100%. The bag is pretty adorable and the flavors are incredible. They are not too sweet, so you will not get that sickening sweet feeling. The Vanilla flavored one taste like vanilla ice cream. The Almond one taste like roasted almonds and the Mango one is pretty sweet, but it doesn't have a strong mango flavor. All flavors are very natural.

The presentation is really eye catching and adorable. Their trade mark is the little face in the bag making it look like it's a character. Caramel Corn is a trade mark and a product of Tohato Japan.
